SUBQ – Avalanche Airbag Jacket
Here was an interesting idea. The guys at SubQ have integrated an Avalanche Airbag into a jacket. There is basically a vest inside the jacket that attaches to the pack on the outside of the jacket. It cinches down much like a normal backpack or avalanche airbag. However, there is no leg loop for the vest. The selling point is that there is very minimal swing weight, and with a vest being under your coat, the pack is about as secure to your body as you can get.
For uphill travel the jacket can be peeled back and held in place on the pack. The pack can be removed to wear the jacket on piste or around town, but has some zippers and that conceal the connection points to the jacket and vest.
The jacket was very hard to get on and off with the vest on. I’m not sure this is ready for prime time yet but it’s good to see people thinking of the possibilities. Looking forward to additionally ideas from Subq in the future.
